This image shows the locations of the first Magellan radar test ground track. The background image was made by the U.S. National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center's Arecibo Observatory Puerto Rico. Resolution of the Arecibo radar image is 2 to 3 kilometers approximately ten times coarser than the Magellan images. The Arecibo image covers that part of Venus which faces Earth every nineteen months when Venus and Earth come closest to each other in their orbits around the sun (from 68 degrees North to 65 degrees South latitude, 270 degrees to 30 degrees East longitude). The Arecibo Observatory is operated by Cornell University for the National Science Foundation.
